New Morality

New Morality from Europe is doing a U.S. tour with Downpresser and Take Offense starting in late July. This will be a killer tour so catch one of their dates if it rolls through your state. Funny enough, I've done designs for all 3 bands within the past year. Don't sleep on these bands. They all shred.

I've been behind on designs but I have been doing at least one a week. Balancing work and band shirts are only slightly easier than balancing them with school. Luckily, I'm done with both and focusing more on my work for the remainder of the summer.

I have finally dove back into my website mess so that should be up within the next couple weeks. All of this will be transferred over to that so my site will be incorporated into my blog. More on that as it gets closer to being finished.

While reading the headlines and newspapers at work, my boss wanted me to make a shirt based on this story so this is what I came up with at work today. Old seventh dagger shirt

I re-drew up this old Seventh Dagger design design for a re-release. They're a strictly straight edge label that's putting out Ghost Ship's new record. Anyways, I took what I was given in terms of the old imagery and revamped it to my style. This looks like it should be a biker back patch.

I have some really cool projects coming up. I get to do a design for one of my favorite bands from when I was just getting into hardcore. So if you knew me back then, I'm sure you know who they are. I only have about 8 of their shirts. As my semester is ending, my list of work is growing so I won't be relaxing too hard.

BEWARE!

I came up with this piece based on photographs I took and textures I collected from around my aneighborhood. It's a collage of drawings, lettering, and trash. I was messing a lot digitally seeing what I can do as far as textures and layering.

The hood jesus is a statue in front of the Ponce Funeral Home (you may know it from Jay-Z). I pass by it every day and I think it's so funny how it faces the street and is so weathered and worn away from the years. His politically 'have mercy' pose was perfect for the beware of dog sign I saw in an empty lot.

Though this is a lot different from much of the other work I've done, it was practical for and generated new ideas for my future work. Like I said, I'm trying to beef up my ink work and move away from using strictly black. So maybe I won't have anything this busy and textured but it will certainly have elements of that. To me, it hints at a rich history and life which is something I've always been interested in. The history and life span of different cultures and works are equally as important as the current statuses. It shows the evolution which is also my goal.

Note: no real jesus' were hurt in the making of this piece.

spirits always watching you...

I did this piece a little over a month ago. 3 color screen print based on an old factoid. For those of you that don't know what a factoid is, it's an invented fact believed to be true because it appears in print, or a trivial fact (according to the Webster's definition).

With that said, I based this on the old factoid that claimed parents used to dress their male children in blue, the color of the sky, to keep the evil spirits away. I guess they didn't have hope for young girls since they're usually dressed in pink or a lighter color.

Luckily for this guy, he's geared up in the coolest blue outfit. Those creepy spirits behind him can't touch him as much as they want to. Maybe these hands are more like that creepy pedophile that lurks in your child's playground. Well, i say, not my kid, not my problem.

Here's a recent project I did for my digital painting class. My assignments have been more or less studies and experiments trying new techniques outside of my comfort zone. I want my digital work to resemble hand-mediums and not get too into the overly-computerized-type work. That style was always bland to me but I'm finding much easier methods to creating work, similar to screen prints, applying textures to lighten up the flat shapes of color I typically work with. This was also the first time that I used a pencil drawing in my final piece. I usually start with pencil and then get crazy with the ink, cleaning things up but I figured I'd keep it, giving it that grainy, rough look.

As far as my other works I have yet to post, there's a lot of the same things going on with my recent work....lots of experimentation! Doing black&white shirt graphics gets really boring after a while so I'm seeing what I can do to broaden my horizons.

You may not have heard much about Thomas' evil twin the cyclops. He's known for bringing terror to young children on the railways so he's not a parent's favorite. Now that the semester is just about over, I'm able to relax a little and let my guard down. It feels great but it won't last long before I'm working on some newer stuff. I've fallen off for just under a month. I have a ton of work I've finished up and can start posting up. I'll break it up to span the posts a little more. This was a 3-piece series I had to do for illustration. I turned it into a skateboarding theme. It was done in acrylic and ink. I used to paint decks when I was in high school so I though it'd be fun to go back and see what I could bring to the table. With that said, these are wayyyy cooler. Unfortunately, skateboard graphics aren't as cool as what they were Powell VCJ-era. I love that stuff and wished it was still relevant. Expect more similar work like this.

I'm not the best blogger and I'll start by saying that. I wish I was better about updating because I've been busy making work. Anyways, you can look at someone else's blog for the daily updates and picture posts found on someone else's blog.

I pulled an all-nighter working on this. I was so stoked on their idea and I knew I could have a lot of fun with it so I went through several drafts, studies, and reference photos to make sure I approached this right. It still came out tough and I was trying new things. My school work has been looking so different because it all has to be in color so I haven't been able to get super technical with linework like usual. Color in itself is a learning experience for me. At least with paint. I'll have to post some of that stuff when I get proper photos.

So for a typography class, we had to create a mixtape and design it with type. I got really nostalgic. I started thinking back to being 10 years old, and making Metallica mixes and getting all crazy with the sharpies writing out the mix name on the blank cd. Now today, that's what I'm still doing but for bands to actually use. So I ran with what was the history of New York Hardcore to me with a list of bands, mostly from the 80's era NYC when the lower east side meant fighting, drugs, and just a free-for-all. Walking through the Bowery feels like a totally different place from what these bands related with. The only documentation of what it was, was in the NY punk rock/hardcore scene and the efforts of Ben Solomon, who photographed/recording life in the LES.

Back to what I did with it, the nostalgic feel and energy of NYHC demading hand-written type. I drew the cover type as well as the song names on the back. The cracked, bold letter of NYHC reflects the old feel and the straight-forward message these bands were giving. No beating around the bush. No story-telling of dreams. Just what life was like and what was going on in New York City in this era. I didn't want to just do another cd like every other person was going ot come in with. Records are tangible and real and were what these bands recorded on. Plus it gave me more space to work and line things out. From drawing my own text, I screen printed the cover myself. It turned into a 10 hour fiasco of what should have taken 4-5 tops. I think this reflects the same energy and dedication of DIY ethics. I wish I knew anything about pressing records because I'd love to have real copies to give out to some newer kids.

I've really been frustrated with life in general and the world lately so this was really relaxing and a way to vent some built frustration. I may have chosen some of the more angry songs based on what I was thinking at that moment. In the end, I have something I feel good about and hope some people are just as stoked.

My big project of the summer finally came in. My obsessive compulsive handwriting actually came in favor for the new Terror record. I was able to write out all the lyrics and thank you's for Terror, which was really cool. I really dig their approach and my handwriting gives a more personal connection to Vogel's lyrics. It's been a while since I've had the chance to go to a good show. The last couple months have just been crazy with me moving, traveling, and just being completely busy with work. The longer it gets, the more crazy I get. I guess I'm missing my balance of work and shows. I did get the chance to see Underdog a week ago though in Long Island. I was amazed at how few people were there or actually stayed for Underdog's set. With that said, Keepers of the Faith has really made me realize that I would never want to chose a different path or fade away like so many people do. It's really important for kids to support their scene and go to as many shows as possible. Kids are really spoiled and I think so many are in it for the wrong reasons. More scene's should take note of this and try an alternative like my boy Tomdom in Syracuse is with his "Each One Must Teach One" gig. Give back to the scene and try to bring in some new faces every once in a while because that's what this is all about. Support real hardcore and fuck the bands that make money off of having everything done for them. KOTF.

I'll be going off the radar for a couple weeks starting Saturday. I'll be relaxing on the beach, eating shrimp, and surfing in the Outer Banks. As soon as I get back, I pack and move to Brooklyn. This is going to be a real crazy next couple weeks but I'm really excited to make moves.

I donated this piece to the Shaun Luu fest and it will be auctioned off along with 9 other pieces from various local artists. It had to have a horror movie them so I chose one of my favorites. Anyways, you can get your hands on this this weekend in Syracuse (the auction will be on the movie day, saturday)....

The 2010 Shaun Luu Horror Fest will take place Friday, June 11th to Sunday, June 13th, with all raised funds to benefit the Westcott Community Center and Upstate Medical University and Golisano Children's Hospital.

The 2009 Shaun Luu Horror Fest completed a pledge of $10,000 to Upstate Golisano Children's Hosptial in memory of Shaun Luu. Shaun died in 2005 at 23 after a long battle with brain cancer.

The horror movie/ music festival raised $5,840, which included a $1,775 contribution from the Palace Theatre, a host of the film festival. The latter gift represents a portion of the proceeds from the theatre's monthly "Brew & View" 35mm themed film series.

Arkansauce Barbeque Sauce!

So for my final project in my Visual Communications, we did a project on branding/packaging/advertisment. We came up up with our own product and built it from there. I chose a barbeque sauce that would compete with Dinosaur Barbeque. Personally, I find my package much cooler (they hold the taste crown). If you didn't catch it in the picture, the brand is named Arkansauce and the labels are shaped like the state of Arkansaus. The logo started from my sketches and were cleaned up on the computer for a more professional look. Arkansauce has a very Western ranch feel to the bottles and is strongly influenced from cattle. which would probably taste great grilled with my sauce. They come in a variety of flavors including; Wild BBQ, Teriyaki, Buffalo, and Chipotle. I doubt I could ever come up with that great of a barbeque sauce in real life but I can tell you if you need a design or even a taste-tester, I'm your man! Arkansauce is for real dogs!

Boots Illustration Book

Our assignment was to draw an object 5 different ways using different mediums and techniques for several weeks to create a style book. Given the option to chose any object to draw, i chose the Doc M's. Because hardcore and the skinhead roots within the music has been a huge influence on my interest in art, the boots felt like a strong object and symbol of both power and pride. Here's just a few of the many pages out of my book. After about 25, you really begin to get frustrated and dig for new ideas and options on interpereting yor object. It was a helpful excercise though.

This was my twist on Michaelangelo's painting of God and Adam in the Sistine Chapel. God has been replaced by an outlaw biker surrounded by his angels. Adam represents the yuppies of this world. It's in a way, poking fun at the Renaissance artwork and the modern fine-art world, full of snobby art fruits.

CD package design

I had to come up with an interesting, inventive cd package design so this is what I came up with. Die cut windows to show the cd through. Sorry to disappoint but these are not going to be sold in limited edition; although that would be tight. Judge; New York hardcore's most influential straight edge band to come out after the Youth Crew period.

I spent a great deal of time on the craft and it could be mistaken for the real thing...working hinge and all. Kept it slick with some clean cardboard to maintain a DIY-feel. I mean, afterall, i did do all this myself, by hand. One of a kind!

This was a character design for one of my illustration classes. You may have seen him before walking out of Wall Street to his over-sized Hummer before. This is the American business man, greedy, and hungry for more; always stuffing his face.

Comic Strip inspired by early 1930's newspaper comics. One of the few projects I've done recently. I have several more to post. Final Survey is on friday then I'm done! Then back to Syracuse for the summer with lots more projects coming up.

Books!

The top book was from last semester where we had to redesign an existing published book. I chose Fahrenheit 451 which ironically is about a society where books are burned and not tolerated in society. It's still one of my favorite books so I chose to deck out its current, dry cover. We were only able to use photographs in our design, so I was limited to a background photo and what I could do with th type.

The second two images are from my recent book-making project. Its content is bits and pieces of Thomas Paine's, Common Sense. We had to lay out the type creating an interesting type-specimen book that reflected the book's content. I decided to create a tri-fold book that opened up like a wallet, with a leather cover. Besides all of the frustration and engineering it took to make sure the book opened smoothly, I had a lot of fun playing with text and creating something different. Plus, the text itself is very interesting and should be important words to all Americans.

More work to get posted when I get more time and finally finish up the semester. Just one more week!

Warrior explosion!

I was asked by my art teacher from high school if I would do a painting for an event they had to raise money for the prom. If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't have felt confident enough to make my artwork into my life. It feels relieving to give back to him in a way. I just finished this up. It was refreshing to take a break from my final projects, as they are stressing me out in crunch time. Anyways, this was done in all spray paint. Simple painting. It didn't take me too long once I finally got the chance to start.

I haven't had a chance to put anything up lately that I've been working on just due to time. My apologies. I'm juggling a bunch of projects and only 2 weeks from being done this semester, and with Utica, FOREVER!

Anyways, I was making my website functionable with coding all weekend so I rushed to get this finished but its got a silly old school vibe. I have a gallery opening at 4 in Utica, NY. It's hosted through my school at PrattMWP. If you're interested, stop by, check out what myself and some of the other young artists are doing, and just say what's up. I'm really excited. I've been frantically sorting through and organizing my work, making sure its up to par and ready for hanging. I drew the flyer for the show, and added the color digitally. By some shocking awe, I may be one of the first people this year to have drawn a flyer. Granted it takes more than 5 minutes and time isn't of the essence, but its the sad truth. For those of you that can't attend, I'll try to get some pictures to document.

Also...back in Syracuse, this is happening at 9 at the Westcott Community Center. The show will start promtly and must finish by 11 so be sure to get there ON TIME to catch all of the bands. Anyways, it'll be in good fun for Ben's big 21st (though that was last week). If you don't know him, just bring some chicken wings and you'll hit it off without a word spoken.

Here's a couple upcoming zines from Syracuse Hardcore. I always appreciate the efforts to take time to write a zine and put out some literature at shows. Not too sure on the content between the two other than, Frozen Stiff being based on the miserabe, cold upstate NY winters, and Hold It Down being based off of a Madball record. I'm expecting lots of hardcore, band interviews, and some fun articles. Active involvement is really necessary in order to keep the energy alive. So if you're around Syracuse for some of the upcoming shows (March 10, 11), grab one of these from either Tron or Tomdom.

I just started experimenting with watercolor. It's different and intimidating because I can't paint over my mistakes. This is a redesigned tarot card and my interperetation of the ten of swords. If you know anything about tarot cards, this is a perfect card for me. If you don't, I'm sure you get the idea. Or maybe you're just a straight edge warrior. Either way, I'm happy with my first piece in watercolor.

Juice Junky Pulp Art

This was a cover I did for a pulp-art magazine cover. I have been drawn to pin-up art and this fit in well with the assignment. I haven't painted in photo-realism in a long time so this was a challenge. I'm pleased with how it came out although it was my first time doing color corrections. Judging the painting by my final digital version, I think I know where I need more practice.

This also isn't to be taken seriously, but I was having more fun with the topics of pharmaceuticals and maintaining the idea of pin-ups and their sex drive. What's more appealing than a wasted pin-up in a back alley. Can I get a "cam awnnnn?"

I just started a new semester so I'm going to try to update on more of my upcoming projects and side-design work. Don't panic, I have some projects up my sleeve.
